One of the last courses I taught was Grade 12 Family Studies to mature students enrolled in an adult education program with Winnipeg Technical College. One of the lessons I taught was on Relationship Violence. Some of the terms that the students learned about included Child Abuse. Child Abuse Includes:
Physical Abuse
Characterized by physical injury, such as bruises and fractures. Although an injury resulting from physical abuse is not accidental, the parent or caregiver may not have intended to hurt the child. The injury may have resulted from severe discipline, including injurious spanking, or physical punishment that is inappropriate to the child's age or condition. The injury may be the result of a single episode or repeated episodes and can range in severity from minor marks and bruising to death.
Emotional Abuse
Psychological maltreatment, a repeated pattern of caregiver behavior or extreme incident(s) that convey to children that they are worthless, flawed, unloved, unwanted, endangered, or only of value in meeting another's needs.
Sexual Abuse
Child sexual abuse generally refers to sexual acts, sexually motivated behaviors, or sexual exploitation involving children.Sexual abuse includes both touching offenses (fondling or sexual intercourse) and nontouching offenses (exposing a child to pornographic materials) and can involve varying degrees of violence and emotional trauma. The most commonly reported cases involve incest, or sexual abuse occurring among family members, including those in biological families, adoptive families, and stepfamilies. Incest most often occurs within a father-daughter relationship; however, mother-son, father-son, and sibling-sibling incest also occurs. Sexual abuse is also sometimes committed by other relatives or caretakers.
Child neglect
Characterized by omissions in care resulting in significant harm or risk of significant harm. Neglect is frequently defined in terms of a failure to provide for the child's basic needs, such as of adequate food, clothing, shelter, supervision, or medical care.
The first laws were passed in 1880s.
Children are no longer the property of their parents.
Parents no longer have the right to beat or physically punish children under their care.
Most provinces have child abuse registries (only a fraction of the cases that exist).
The federal government has not established a central child abuse registry.
Munchausen’s Syndrome by Proxy:
Where a parent causes a child to become ill and rushes the child to the hospital or convinces doctors that the child is sick. It’s a way for the parent to gain attention and sympathy, and its dangers to the child constitute child abuse.(DoSomething.org: Terms you should know about Child Abuse) Added by Renee House-Wyatt

I primarily taught English Language Arts, but also had the pleasure of teaching Grade 12 Family Studies. I've included some terms, an instructional product and a PowerPoint Presentation I used to teach the class. Please include any comments or feedback you'd like to share. Thanks for visiting!

I created a Wordle using a web-based tool found on wordle.com. Due to the subject matter, it was very appropriate in showing all the signs to look out for in dating violence. I though it was very effective and met the needs of my adult learners, many who had suffered from relationship violence.
Feel free to view the Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation I created for this lesson.

Child Neglect I found what you wrote interesting about child neglect. I include child development in my 6th grade curriculum. As a class we talk about the role of the parent and their duties, responsibilities, and qualifications. We speak about neglect within this unit. In 8th grade we talk about nutrion and healthy eating. We also speak of neglect in the case of food and nutrion in the home. As educators we have to keep our eyes open and I try to tell my students about it because I am training them for babysitting. They need to be aware as well.
